Befriending Involvement

Befriending is different to a friendship which is a private, mutual relationship.

Befriending is a service provided, supplied and monitored by a voluntary or statutory agency.

It involves meeting Clients, getting to know them, and if all goes well, negotiating a regular pattern of rewarding contact and support.

Befriending is usually offered on an individual basis. This involves a weekly or fortnightly commitment of 2 or 3 hours.

Befriending can be short or long term.

Expenses incurred as a result of befriending voluntary work will be reimbursed.

Extracts of comments from some present befrienders:

  • it is a constant, but rewarding challenge
  • for a low day for the befriendee , verbal communication is less important than a comforting presence
  • it is a caring opportunity
  • it is a real joy to see changes especially the first sparkle
  • it helps me to become an active member of my community
  • it helps me feel valued
